Looking at the Earth from space

If one compares the earth to a hen's egg its atmosphere is very thin - like the shell. In fact, if the earth were shrunk to the size of an egg, the atmosphere would be thinner than the shell of the egg. We human beings live our lives in this atmosphere clinging to the earth. The atmosphere and water, which covers 70% of the earth's surface, generate dynamic cloud formations. It is these clouds which give it such an expressive appearance. In 1877 the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli thought he saw canals on the surface of the planet Mars - if he had been able to see earth from space the beauty of its always-varying aspect compared to Mars would have had a much greater fascination for him. A desire to see these wonderful effects for myself led to this hobby activity. I make use of the radio signals transmitted from the NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - USA) weather satellites as they are easier to receive and provide good high-resolution images. NOAAs are satellites orbiting the earth over the poles north-to-south and south-to-north at almost the same altitude (800km) as the space shuttle.
